POWERFUL HOMES FOUNDATION MAKES HOME OWNERSHIP MORE ACCESSIBLE

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we work with professionals whose work is critical to communities and yet often experience economic hardship (e.g., teachers, medical assistants, first responders). It provides many financial supports to participants, including forgivable grants for home purchase down payments, home warranty, and assistance for home furnishings and moving costs.

However, participants’ lack of understanding about financial equity and how to navigate and create opportunity from home ownership often remains a barrier to socioeconomic stability. Our program seeks to design, implement, and evaluate a housing literacy education program for 1st time homebuyers.

Currently, housing literacy is an underdeveloped educational domain; exposure to such information is likely to have beneficial intergenerational effects on individuals, families and communities.  Our program represents an opportunity for innovation both within the field of education and among attempts to reduce socioeconomic inequality through housing ownership.
